VBMA Exhibition ~ Poetry of Nature: Hudson River School Landscapes from the NY Historical Society. January 23 – May 2. The Hudson River School rose to eminence in New York during the first half of the 19th century. This loosely knit group of artists, together with like-minded poets and writers, forged a self-consciously “American” landscape vision and literary voice.
Poetry of Nature, comprised of some 40 paintings by 25 artists ranging in date from 1818 to 1886, offers a varied survey of important paintings conceived in the style of the Hudson River School and further enriched by each artist’s personal vision. The exhibition also offers an opportunity to explore the exchanges of influence among a group of artists whose social and professional networks in New York City and at their favored sketching grounds established an artistic vision that we now recognize as the Hudson River School. The exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society.

VBMA International Lecture Series January 25, 4:30 – 7:00pm
Karen E. Quinn ~ Historian, Curator and Leading Expert on the Hudson River School. “Glorious Marvels of the Land:” The Hudson River School This lecture will be presented via Livestream at the VBMA or into your home.
During the 19th century, the American landscape was elevated to a place of national pride. Hudson River School painter Albert Bierstadt remarked, “Truly all is remarkable and a wellspring of amazement and wonder. Man is so fortunate to dwell in this American Garden of Eden.” The Hudson River School had a significant role in this vision of America. Just what was the Hudson River School? What drove the rise and importance of this group of painters? Why did it decline after the Civil War? Karen Quinn explores the answers to these questions against the backdrop of the VBMA’s exhibition Poetry of Nature.
