Vero Beach Theater Guild presents FOOTLOOSE THE MUSICAL, July 8 – 31

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story pins a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated Top 40 score, augmented with dynamic new songs, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and open mind.

VBMA presents Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee

On View through September 2022, Holmes and Titelman Galleries

Doris Lee, The View, Woodstock

Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee features 74 of the most notable and compelling works of art by Doris Lee (1905-1983). Using a vibrant color palette, Lee sparks feelings of playfulness and humor in her paintings, drawings, prints, and commissioned commercial designs for fabric and pottery. Simple Pleasures includes works by the artist spanning from the 1930s through the 1960s from both public and private collections and gives overdue recognition to Lee’s significant contributions to American art. A selection of ephemera, such as product advertisements for the American Tobacco Company and General Foods who commissioned paintings from Lee, will also be included in the exhibition.

Doris Lee, Two Cats

Known as one of the foremost American artists during the 1930s and 1940s, Lee was a leading figure in the Woodstock Artist’s Colony. Decades after World War II, Lee responded to the rise of Abstract Expressionism with skill and agility and her own sense of grace, developing her own visual style. By taking a modernist approach and using clean, abstract lines, Lee’s body of work merges the reduction of abstraction with the appeal of the everyday and offers a coherent visual identity that successfully bridged various artistic “camps” that arose in the post-World War II era, truly depicting scenes of the simple pleasures of everyday life.

VBMA will present a full slate of related programming, including Art Talks in the gallery, studio art classes, and artmaking projects for families. For more information and to register for programs, please visit the website and call (772) 231-0707 ext. 136.

The Vero Beach Museum of Art announced it will join museums nationwide in the Blue Star Museums initiative, a program that provides free admission to currently-serving U.S. military personnel and their families this summer. This summer, Blue Star Families can enjoy Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee exhibition on view thru September 18, explore students and Veteran artworks in the Patten Community Gallery as well as enjoy the Art Zone an interactive children’s space. “The arts play an important role to our overall well-being and now more than ever we are committed to ensuring access for all, and hope our active military and their families will take full advantage of all the Museum has to offer.” Commented Sophie Bentham-Wood, VBMA Director of Marketing and Communications.

McKee Botanical Garden will offer free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day, September 5.
