The Vero Beach Museum of Art is pleased to announce it’s popular 2020 Winter Film Series starting on Tuesday, February 11, has remaining seats and registration is open.

The Winter series offers two excellent opportunities to view several films from colder climes and those in conjunction with the VBMA’s new exhibition From Homer to Hopper: American Art from The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC.

Northern Lights: Warm Tales from Cold Climates features filmmakers from northern lands that have contributed more and more to the cinema in recent years. Directors from these far-away places are eager for us to know that they, too, have important messages, and even great humor, to share with us. Films will be from Norway, Iceland, and other locales typically associated with the cold. One film is The Other Side of Hope, a 2017 film from famed Norwegian director, Aki Kaurismäki, whose new works are always much anticipated because he takes his time in deciding what project to select next.

The final grouping for the 2020 Film Studies Series is American Roots: Celebrating our Nation’s Cultural Contributions in the Arts. These films are offered in conjunction with the VBMA’s exhibit From Homer to Hopper: American Art from the Phillips Collection, Washington DC, on view through May 31, 2020, and present a series of films that highlight the spirit of American culture between 1850 and 1950 including a few movies depicting wonderful American writers and painters from the era such as Last Call, about the troubled genius of F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Last Tycoon.

Classes will be held Tuesdays beginning February 11 and continuing through April 14, 2020.  Students may sign up for either the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. or the evening session at 7 p.m. as part of the five-week film studies offering. Films will be introduced, and discussions moderated at the Museum by Diane Thelen, and are screened in the Museum’s state-of-the-art Leonhardt Auditorium.
