The sage and centuries-old wisdom says, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Lines in the Lagoon, Inc., an Indian River County nonprofit organization, takes that advice seriously and literally with its annual Youth Fishing Tournament organized by teens to help raise awareness and educate children about the health of the Indian River Lagoon. Every year, up to 150 youth anglers compete and receive fishing tackle, gear, educational materials, and a lifelong appreciation for both fishing and environmental stewardship. The Dyer Difference Award in Indian River County for September honors the work of Lines in the Lagoon and supports the eighth annual tournament and its hands-on, ‘teach a man to fish’ educational component.
