Collaboration reaps great rewards and Wednesday, February 1, 2023 from 10 am to 11:30 am has been set aside for a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the Grand Opening of Oyster Bar Marsh Conservation Area; a project made possible through the efforts of Indian River County, Indian River Land Trust, Trust for the Internal Improvement Fund of Florida and Florida Inland Navigation District.
“This is a public celebration,” said Indian River Board of County Commission Chair, Joseph Earman. “As stewards of the taxpayer dollar, the Board is proud of the effort put forth by staff to work with our partners and deliver a project that is not only a celebration for the environment but a legacy for generations to come.”
Ken Grudens, Executive Director of the Indian River Land Trust is equally pleased. “The entire Land Trust Board and staff are excited to be opening a new public trail system together with the County that was created with substantial private donations made through the Land Trust. It’s a true win-win,” said Grudens.
The Oyster Bar Marsh Conservation Area is a large mangrove wetland/impoundment that extends from the barrier island into the Indian River Lagoon. Purchased in conjunction with the Indian River Land Trust, this 132-acre parcel provides refuge to numerous wading birds and fish species. Its proximity to Round Island Conservation Area creates a broad shallow expanse of River bottom suitable for seagrass establishment and potential manatee foraging.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend. Overflow parking will be available at Round Island Riverside Park.
