The Indian River County Historical Society will re-open the Vero Train Station Exhibit Center to residents and visitors on Friday, July 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 2336 14th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
The community is invited to explore the Exhibit Center after the Independence Day parade and during the antique car show. Visitors will have an opportunity to view the exhibits, learn about local railroad history, and experience one of the community’s treasured historic landmarks.
Admission is $5.00 per person, and children under 12 are admitted free.
The event offers a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about local history and to discover the ongoing preservation efforts and historical significance of the Vero Train Station and its exhibits.
“We are excited to open our doors on Independence Day to provide the community a special preview of the exhibits and history housed within the station,” said Historical Society President Jonnie Mae Perry. “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our local heritage while enjoying the festivities taking place throughout Vero Beach.”
The following week, on Thursday, July 9th, there will be an official rededication program for the historic 1903 Vero Railroad Station. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., there are planned remarks from local dignitaries as well as a history of the station from County Historian Ruth Stanbridge. The occasion will celebrate the restoration and preservation of one of our county’s treasured historic landmarks and its continued importance to our community’s heritage and future. The railroad station was the first building in Indian River County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 1987.
“During the last several years, we have made important repairs to the building and grounds and made updates in the Exhibit Center. We will have assistance in the Exhibit Center from the Vero Beach Model Railroaders, who will explain unique features of the old station,” said Perry.
For over thirty years, the Indian River County Historical Society has contributed to the preservation of historical and environmental resources of Indian River County, the Indian River Lagoon area, and the State of Florida. Through educational programs, historical preservation, and community events, the Historical Society fosters a deep appreciation for our shared local heritage. The Historical Society is a membership-based, non-profit organization.
