Indian River Clay, a leading non-profit ceramic arts organization on the Treasure Coast, today announced its intent to acquire the school district property at 1427 19th Street, formerly the Alternative Learning Center.
This strategic transformation addresses the organization’s rapid growth and aligns with Vero Beach’s Cultural Arts Village.
Since its founding in 2018, Indian River Clay has evolved from a small group of artists to a cornerstone of the local creative economy. Currently operating out of a 4,000 sq. ft. facility with 75 artists, the organization faces a growing waitlist of 80 potential members and capacity limits that hinder its educational and community outreach missions.
“We have operated conservatively since our founding with the intent to build and sustain value,” said Susan Scarola, Vice Chair and Treasurer of Indian River Clay. “The acquisition of 1427 19th Street will allow us to double membership, offer rare private artist studios, and finally launch a dedicated children’s ceramic studio.”
The proposed expansion offers several key benefits to the community:
• Expanded Arts Access: Immediate capacity for new members and the addition of private studios. Adult classroom space to increase enrollment above the current 520 students.
• Youth Education: The new facility will safely accommodate children’s programming and school partnerships, ensuring art opportunities regardless of economic means.
• Cultural Destination: Plans include public demonstrations, exhibits and the creation of a ceramic museum unique to Florida, enhancing downtown’s viability and tourism.
• Enhanced Philanthropy: Indian River Clay currently supports numerous nonprofits including the Samaritan Center and Community One Initiative.
The new space will remove physical constraints on these vital community partnerships.
The project is slated to be funded through the sale of Indian River Clay’s current facility, mortgage financing and the launch today of a targeted capital campaign. Indian River Clay looks forward to collaborating with the school district and local leaders to align this expansion with the broader objectives of the Vero Beach community.
