The Alzheimer & Parkinson Association of Indian River County announces a new series of programs and workshops to be held at the Intergenerational Center during the months of June and July. The programs, all of which are free of charge, are offered to those with memory and/or movement disorders and their caregivers.
“We offer programs throughout Indian River County, from the Sebastian area to the barrier island and the mainland, but we are ramping up our offerings to the South County residents during these summer months,” said Peggy Cunningham, Executive Director of the Alzheimer & Parkinson Association.
A list of the upcoming programs includes:
Social Respite- Offered every Tuesday in June and July from 9 am to 3 pm. Those with dementia may be dropped off during this time, providing the caregiver some much-needed respite. Engaging activities such as light exercise, games, arts and crafts, music and more, are provided in a safe and uplifting environment while the caregiver can run errands or just have some time for themself. No appointment is necessary; however it is requested that the loved one be dropped off by 10 am.
Memory Screenings- appointments available on June 28 from 9 am to 3 pm. A memory screening is a simple and safe evaluation tool that checks memory and other cognitive skills. It consists of a series of questions and/or tasks designed to test memory, language skills, thinking ability and other intellectual functions. The process is confidential and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Anyone over the age of 50 is encouraged to have a baseline memory screening which may then be shared with family and/or their physician.
